Manchester United’s new stance on Mason Greenwood is designed to make sure he retains market value, SportsLens understands.

Last week new Old Trafford investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe declared the club would be making a fresh decision on his future, as the 22-year-old attempts to assert himself again in top level football.

Greenwood is on loan at Spanish side Getafe and has not played for Manchester United since January 2022 following his arrest and charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm that were later dropped.

He is under contract in Manchester until 2025 but intentions to reintroduce him to the squad were abandoned and he was sent on a season-long suit in La Liga instead.

It was expected he would never play for United again yet Ratcliffe appeared to open the door again last week as he was asked about the ongoing situation.

However, SportsLens sources are indicating that it remains the case that Greenwood is not being viewed as a player who could be about to return to the frame for next season.

And insiders believe United’s new approach to dealing with the situation will instead be aimed at ensuring he continues to hold some value in the market as they will not want to write him off.

Barcelona are linked with the forward while Getafe have a desire to prolong his stay with them.

Greenwood was on course to become a £100million asset to United before his troubles and the prospect of still holding some value is intriguing.

It is felt the player is not expecting to return to United either, though, and is enjoying his new pathway back into the game.
