Chelsea’s true intent around Viktor Gyokeres will be tested this summer, as AC Milan start to show genuine interest in the Sporting forward.
A lack of goal threat proved critical again for the Blues at the weekend as they failed to score against a severely weakened Liverpool team and suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat in the Carabao Cup final.
Victor Osimhen is the name most expected to be pursued by Chelsea at the end of this season as they seek a new forward, but reports have suggested they still admire Gyokeres and their interest in the player is real.
But AC Milan are looking at him as a good fit for their team build for next season and there is an expectation they will reach out to Sporting CP before the end of the campaign.
The Italian club are likely to be in the market for a new elite forward as star man Rafael Leao is being heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea Transfer News
Our SportsLens sources have been suggesting that Gyokeres would prefer the option of remaining on the Continent when he does make his next move and is not fixed on a Premier League move any time soon.
Chelsea could test that state of mind and it is expected that the club will start to lock down transfer plans before the season is over.
Gyokeres has scored 30 goals from 33 matches since moving to Portugal from Coventry City last summer.
That record is outstanding, especially when you compare it to Chelsea’s goal output this season where Cole Palmer is leading scorer with 12 and Nicolas Jackson ranks second with nine goals.
Gyokeres, 25, has a whopping £86million release clause at Sporting and Coventry will also benefit from any future deal thanks to an additional sell on clause as part of the deal last summer.
It remains to be seen what other Chelsea transfer news will hit the headlines this summer after such a disappointing campaign so far.
