Manchester City 1-0 Brentford Report: Haaland Seals Cityzens Victory
After a disappointing draw against Chelsea last time out, Manchester City were in need of a response against Brentford on Tuesday evening to maintain the pressure on league leaders Liverpool.
Despite the need for a victory, Kevin De Bruyne was named on the bench for Pep Guardiola‘s side as they continue to carefully manage the Belgian after his return from injury. This opened the door for Norwegian youngster Oscar Bobb to make his first Premier League start, who ran the left flank alongside Manuel Akanji.
The first half was a cagey one, and after missed chances from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, as well as an excellent goal line clearance from Brentford’s Ben Mee – the pair head into the break drawing 0-0.
City looked as if they were becoming frustrated, but their persistence would eventually pay off.
Several missed chances against the Blues over the weekend saw Erling Haaland‘s name dominate the headlines, but he made sure to silence the doubters this time around – calmly slotting past an inspired Mark Flekken to open the scoring after 71 minutes.
Haaland thought he had his second just seven minutes later too, but Kyle Walker was correctly adjudged to have been offside in the build-up to the goal.
The hosts pushed hard for another, but the scoreline remained 1-0. Guardiola’s men are now unbeaten in 16 straight matches across all competitions, and are just one point behind the table-topping Reds ahead of their clash against Luton on Wednesday night.
What Next For Manchester City & Brentford?
Up next for the Cityzens is a trip down to the south coast, where they’ll be hoping to make it back-to-back victories in the Premier League when they take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday evening.
As for Brentford, they face another away trip on Monday night. It’s a relatively short trip though, as they head to the London Stadium to take on struggling a West Ham United side.
