It took some time for £73m signing Rasmus Hojlund to find form at Manchester United but all that has been forgotten now as the Danish striker netted his 11th goal of the season against Aston Villa.
Hojlund’s form
Hojlund signed for Manchester United in August. On boxing day, he scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-2 comeback win against Aston Villa.
He scored against Villa again in a 2-1 win over the weekend, he now has five Premier League – 11 in all competitions.
He’s also the youngest player to score five goals in five games for Manchester United.
Before his first Premier League goal, Hojlund had scored five in the Champions League. However, it wasn’t enough to keep his team in the competition.
The 21-year-old is shaping up to be a superstar and he’s being applauded by pundits and former players for his dedication to Manchester United.
Praising Hojlund
Peter Schmeichel has been full of praise for fellow Dane Hojlund. He said: “It was only two-and-a-half years ago that he was in the Copenhagen squad and they signed another striker and they told him to go back to the Under 19s.
“Sturm Graz came in for him and said ‘we’ve got to give you first team football’ he took it and the first seven months there, nine months at Atalanta after and now he’s at Manchester United.
“It’s gone really, really quick for him, but at no point have I been in any doubt that this lad is the real deal, he’s got everything in his locker, he poaches goals, his movement…
“I’ve seen this for a year now since he broke into the Danish team. You know when you see something which is very, very special that doesn’t come along very often? That’s what I’ve seen in him.”
Schmeichel made 398 appearances for Manchester United in his career – winning 15 trophies.
Paul Merson says Hojlund’s a superstar
It’s hard to get Paul Merson to praise a player or club but Hojlund has managed to do that with his recent displays. Merson said: “I like him. He’s a young kid, he’s 21 and playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. If there was one thing you could bottle up in football, you ask anyone, it’s confidence.
“He’s got confidence now and football is all about confidence. He holds the ball up well and lays it off well to the wingers.
“You start to get into the game a lot more and the confidence rises. Those chances keep coming and you start to take them. In those first 10 games, when he was going without a goal, he was snatching at everything. And he’s got it.
“If that ball [for Hojlund’s opening goal] at Villa comes in at the start of the season, he would’ve hit it as hard as he could. But he places it under the goalkeeper. He’s a good player, I think he will be a superstar.”
