With Aston Villa’s impressive home record up against the injury stricken Newcastle United side, many expected the home side to ease to victory. The visitors showed from the first whistle that they would be no pushovers as they chase down a Champions League spot.
Newcastle were threats right from the off. Anthony Gordon looked a real threat from the left wing, as he has done for most of the season.
However, for all Newcastle United’s attacking talent, it was Fabian Schär who opened the scoring for the North East side. The defender tapped home after weak defending from a corner. The Swiss defender wasn’t finished there, scoring his second goal four minutes later.
The Newcastle United fan’s signing was paused briefly in the first half when Swedish striker Alexander Isak limped off before half-time. He’ll join what’s already a large injury list for Eddie Howe.
Aston Villa picked up in the second half but failed to get a goal back before Newcastle made it three. Spanish defender Alex Moreno turned the ball into his own net and took a whack from the goal post while he was at it.
The game appeared over, with Newcastle looking set for an easy three points. This was until Unai Emery made a couple of changes and decided to bring on Leon Bailey. The winger looked a threat out wide for Villa and gave the hosts a lifeline when he found Ollie Watkins to make it 3-1.
