Newcastle United are reportedly targeting a list of potential midfield signings, after the Magpies failed to secure a deal for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Newcastle are looking into back-up plans for their midfield after missing out on Kalvin Phillips. There was real confidence at the start of the month that they would come to an agreement over a deal for the England midfielder but now he is joining West Ham United there has to be a Plan B.
Recruitment staff have been seeking new candidates for the Magpies to consider and have begun to do this by reaching out to top clubs about players that could be available – while also being offered players by intermediaries.
With one week of the window left, Eddie Howe will be looking to find a solution to the problem and the ideal scenario will be to find a loan deal.
The plan for Phillips was to play a more broad range of midfield roles than just a defensive one if he joined Newcastle and they are now seeking alternatives.
The club have so far been looking into midfielders including Ederson at Atalanta and Amadou Onana at Everton for the long-term, however both of those might prove to be too complicated at this stage of the window.
Meanwhile there is work to be done around the future of Joelinton, as the Brazilian is currently out injured but speculation around him having an uncertain future because of his contract situation is believed to be true.
Sources have indicated that there is currently a “fair distance” between the terms he would like and the ones actually on offer.
Joelinton, who is currently injured, has a contract until 2025 but the club will be forced to consider how they build the squad out if they continue to struggle to find an agreement on the Brazilian’s deal.
With all this in mind, it would be another reason for Newcastle to pursue a loan deal now that offers the incentive of a buy option further down the road if things go well.
