Ever since it was founded in 1957, the Africa Cup of Nations has provided the platform for the continent’s best countries to showcase their skills and talents on a global scale.
To date, 15 different teams have been crowned the champions of Africa with almost half of those winners going on to land more than one title.
With the 2023 AFCON in full swing, here at SportsLens, we’ve taken a look back at the most successful teams in the tournament’s history.
Most Successful AFCON teams
The most successful team in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations is Egypt, who have seven titles to their name. The Pharoaoh’s first win came in the very first edition of the tournament with their last coming in 2010.
In second place, Cameroon boast five titles with their first coming in 1984 with their most recent in 2017. Ghana have four titles to complete the top three.
Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Algeria and DR Congo are the only other nations to have won the tournament on more than one occasion.

2023 AFCON Winner
Picking the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner will not be easy, with a number of teams all realistically staking a claim for success.
Reigning champions Senegal are expected to go far, as are Mo Salah‘s Egypt and host nation the Ivory Coast will also fancy their chances.
2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco will also be gunning for glory, but it’s Sadio Mane’s Lions of Teranga who are the best UK betting sites outright favourites – they can be backed at 4/1.
