Liverpool and Egypt star Mohamed Salah is worth more than twelve countries’ entire AFCON 2023 squad values.

The Egyptian King will once again be donning his national jersey at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast. The tournament gets underway on 13 January, with the final on 11 February.

Salah was a beaten finalist at the previous tournament in Cameroon. His side lost out to former Reds teammate Sadio Mane as Senegal lifted the trophy in 2021.

In 93 senior international appearances, Salah has racked up 53 goals, and captains the Egyptian team. But it’s his club form that’s made him one of football’s biggest names.

Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has scored 204 goals in 332 total matches, with 88 assists. The prolific winger helped Jurgen Klopp’s team to the Premier League title in 2020, a year after winning the Champions League.

Now 31 years old, Salah is still one of the most valuable players in the sport. At an estimated value of €65 million, Mo Salah is worth more than the entire AFCON 2023 squads of 12 nations.

How Much Is Every AFCON 2023 Squad Worth?

Morocco have the highest AFCON 2023 squad value. With the likes of Achraf Hakimi and Nayef Aguerd in their ranks, the North Africans boast some of the biggest names at this year’s tournament.

They are narrowly ahead of Nigeria in the squad value charts. Nigeria’s star man is Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen. At an estimated value of €110 million, he’s the most expensive player at AFCON 2023.

At the other end of the scale, Namibia’s entire squad is worth just €6.43 million in today’s market. Their most valuable player is forward Peter Shalulile, at €2.2 million.

The 30-year-old plies his trade for Mamelodi Sundowns FC in South Africa’s DStv Premiership. Namibia’s entire AFCON 2023 squad value is more than ten times lower than Mo Salah’s estimated worth.

Elsewhere, Premier League fans will recognise the likes of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, as well as André Onana of Manchester United.

With so many big names missing from Europe’s top leagues over the coming weeks, managers will have to consider other options from their squads. It’s a great opportunity for fringe players to step up while some of their clubs’ superstars are away.

But what is a headache for clubs and managers is a footballing feast for fans. AFCON 2023 is set to kick off on Saturday 13 January as hosts Ivory Coat take on Guinea-Bissau in Group A.
