Crystal Palace vs Everton (0-0) Report: Replay Required To Decide Third Round Winner
Everton came into tonight’s FA Cup third round opener against Crystal Palace looking to bring an end to their four game losing streak. The Toffees put up some respectable performances in defeats to Manchester City and Tottenham in the last couple of weeks, but were well beaten by Wolves last time out.
Palace on the other hand, came into the clash off the back of a convincing victory 3-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League, a win that brought an end to an eight game winless run for Roy Hodgson and his men.
Michael Olise, their star player with four goals and an assist in his last four games, was unavailable for Everton’s visit through injury and his absence was certainly felt.
Matheus Franca did his best to replicate the Frenchman’s attacking prowess, and did so very well on several occasions, but the Eagles weren’t able to take advantage of the Brazilian’s silky footwork down the right-hand side.
Everton looked the most likely of the pair to open the scoring both in the first half and the second half, however their onslaught of attacks against the hosts’ defence was brought to an abrupt end when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was shown his marching orders thanks to another controversial VAR decision.
With just 11 minutes of normal time to play, Palace threw everything at the Toffees but they couldn’t find a breakthrough. A third round replay at Goodison Park will now be required to determine which side advances to the competition’s fourth round.
What Next For Crystal Palace & Everton?
Up next for Crystal Palace is a tough trip to the Emirates on the 20th of January to take on high-flying Arsenal in the league. The Gunners were narrow 1-0 victors when the sides last met near the end of August, where Martin Odegaard’s second half penalty was enough to seal all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Everton are back in action on the 14th of January, and also face a tough fixture as they welcome second-place Aston Villa to Goodison Park.
