Phillips Eager To Join Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United
Public expectation around this deal seems to be that it would happen quickly because of his obvious availability to move away from Manchester City.
However, it is not straight forward and there are three levels of negotiating that need to take place. The first is over an initial loan fee, the second involves turning that loan into a permanent transfer, and the third is personal terms for the player.
Newcastle are not looking at the transfer as a short fix to help them through this season. He is a player that has been identified to fit with the characteristics of the squad and to become a long-term part of the side.
In terms of the financing, a loan is expected to cost in the region of £7million while a permanent transfer will be worth up to £50million.
Phillips, 28, has featured just four times in the Premier League so far this season, playing a total of just 89 minutes. He tried to work his way into Pep Guardiola’s plan over the past month but has had to accept he needs a move away.
Juventus have been keen to show him an escape route, but the feeling is that Phillips would prefer to remain in English football. There is also some doubt from a City perspective about whether Juve could offer the terms on a loan with obligation to buy that would meet their valuation.

Newcastle are having to be extra careful around FFP restrictions and as such it works for them to loan now and sign permanently later.
Sources have suggested that the move will progress next week, but Newcastle are not in a rush to get the agreement on the table because their next match in the Premier League is against Man City – so Phillips would be ineligible for that one anyway.
Newcastle have lost seven of their last eight matches – and even that one victory was against a Fulham side who went down to ten-men after 22 minutes.
The team are in need of a turnaround and while Phillips is in sight to help with that this season, there is certainly also a plan for him to be part of the squad as they look towards the future too.
