Having refereed Chelsea three times in the Premier League last season, Paul Tierney is yet to take charge of a Blues game this term.

The same cannot be said for Luton though, as the 43-year-old has officiated the newly-promoted side on one occasion. That came back in early September, where the Hatters fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to West Ham on the fourth matchday of the campaign.

Saturday afternoon’s clash will become Tierney’s 12th English top flight game of the campaign, and his fifth in December – following on from Nottingham Forest vs Everton, Fulham vs West Ham, Manchester City vs Crystal Palace and Burnley vs Liverpool.

The Wigan-born official has brandished 41 yellow cards thus far in 2023/24, an average of 3.49 per game, as well as three red cards. Tierney has also awarded three penalty kicks in the league this term, for Arsenal against Fulham in August, for Manchester City in October’s Manchester derby, and most recently for Crystal Palace in their 2-2 draw against the reigning champions.
