Chelsea Could Equal Worst Home Derby Record In 27 Years If They Fail To Beat Crystal Palace

Chelsea’s home record in London derbies has been dreadful recently, with them not beating a London club in the league at Stamford Bridge in almost a full year.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are winless in their last four Premier League home games against their fellow London rivals. They have not gone five matches without a derby victory at Stamford Bridge since 1995/96.

The Blues’ last home league win in a London derby was in January 2023 when they defeated Crystal Palace 1-0. Since then, they have drawn twice and lost the other two matches.

It’s been a torrid season again for Chelsea so far. Despite spending more than £1 billion on transfers since Todd Boehly took control of the club in 2022, they have stagnated, if not gone backwards.

Currently 11th in the Premier League table, they are only seven points above relegation, but nine off the Europa League places. They lost 2-1 at Wolves on Christmas Eve, and defeat against Crystal Palace could see them slip even further down the table.

Chelsea’s Home Record Against London Rivals

Since sacking Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, Chelsea’s home record has been awful against the other London clubs. Of the six home London derbies they’ve played in the league during that period, they have won just once.

A goalless draw with Fulham in February is hardly a well-earned point, though they did well to get something from October’s clash with Arsenal in a 2-2 draw. But two defeats to Brentford as well as last season’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal are a reminder of Chelsea’s recent struggles.

  • November 2022 – Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
  • January 2023 – Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace
  • February 2023 – Chelsea 0-0 Fulham
  • April 2023 – Chelsea 0-2 Brentford
  • October 2023 – Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal
  • October 2023 – Chelsea 0-2 Brentford

Chelsea have also managed not to play either of Tottenham or West Ham at home in the league since Tuchel left. With those fixtures still to come this season and both sides doing well so far, there could easily be another two home defeats added to Chelsea’s growing worries.

While it is by no means the only issue facing them at the moment, Chelsea’s London derby record is another example of just how far they’ve fallen in a very short space of time.

For a club that won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 to be languishing around mid table just two years on is bizarre. But with the money Chelsea have spent in that time, it is also absolutely unacceptable.

Pochettino faces growing pressure ahead of tonight’s game with Crystal Palace, and calls for him to be sacked will only grow louder should they fail to win yet another London derby at Stamford Bridge.
