Harry Kane has had a tremendous start in the Bundesliga, scoring 20 goals in 14 matches for Bayern Munich. This now has him on course for breaking a record that is currently owned by Robert Lewandowski.
What is the record?
Lewandowski has the most goals in a single Bundesliga season with 41. He achieved this in just 29 games. Kane will need to get another 20 goals in the next 14 games in order to beat Lewandowski’s record and beat the number of games he did it in. Kane is currently on track to score 48 goals with the overall number of games in the Bundesliga is 33.
This is astonishing considering the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga last season was Niclas Fullkrug with 16 goals.
Lewandowski speaks on the record
Lewandowski broke the record in the 2020/21 season. The previous player to hold the record was Gerd Muller in 1972. Lewandowski was asked about Kane breaking his record in his debut season at Bayern Munich and he replied: “When I think about my record and the 41 goals in just 29 games, I still find it incredible.
“That was crazy. ‘The Hurricane’ is a great player, but the Bundesliga is not an easy league either. I think he needs a bit of time and you can’t tell yet.
“I myself would never have thought that Gerd Muller’s record could be broken after 40 years. I can’t explain today how I did it either. Every piece of the puzzle has to be perfect.”
What’s next for Kane?
Kane isn’t up for discussing the record just yet. He said: “No, it’s still a bit too far away to think about.
“If I’m close in April, I’ll of course try to achieve the record. It was Robert with 41 goals, as far as I know.
“There’s still a long way to go. Robert has been fantastic for the club and is one of the best strikers in the world in recent times. We’re still a long way from that, but I just have to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Usually, Kane would be preparing to play an abundance of games in the Premier League for the festive season but he just has one more left with the Bundesliga taking a three-week break. Bayern Munich travel to Wolfsburg in hope of a win to close the gap to Bayer Leverkusen in 1st. Of course, Kane will be looking for a goal or two in that one.
