Arsenal vs Brighton Report: Jesus And Havertz Send Gunners Top

The hosts went into the game knowing that they would go top of the Premier League table should they win, prior to Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United. Brighton had won two of their last ten in the league, having lost the momentum they had at the start of the season.

The first half was dominated by Arsenal, who should’ve found an opener at least once. Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli both squandered good chances, keeping Bart Verbruggen busy between the Brighton sticks. The Seagulls failed to record a single shot during the opening 45.

Early into the second half, the Gunners finally found a breakthrough. Jan Paul van Hecke failed to deal with Bukayo Saka’s corner, allowing Gabriel Jesus to head home at the far post.

Kai Havertz secured the win late in the game, slotting home his finish after a clever throughball from substitute Eddie Nketiah. The German now has four goals in his last seven games for the Gunners.

The win propelled Arsenal to the top of the league, at least temporarily, before the Liverpool vs Manchester United game later on Sunday.

As for Brighton, this loss, along with West Ham’s win against Wolves, means Roberto De Zerbi’s side drop to ninth. They will be hoping to get back on track at Crystal Palace on Thursday night.

Mikel Arteta’s side will look to land a huge blow in the title race when they take on Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday in a mouth-watering clash before Christmas.
