Sheffield United vs Liverpool Report: Van Dijk & Szoboszlai On Target In Reds Win

After Arsenal’s late winner against Luton on Tuesday evening, Liverpool knew that they had to beat Sheffield United in order to keep the pressure on the Premier League leaders – and that’s exactly what they did as Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai scored either side of the half time whistle.

The Blades started were the ones who startes on the front foot with Cameron Archer posing an issue for the Reds defence, and the first clear opportunity came in the 11th minute when Archer pinched the ball off Joe Gomez to send James McAtee in behind – but the Manchester City loanee’s low strike was saved well by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool started growing into the game after this, winning corners and free-kicks in the hosts’ half and they were rewarded for this pressure 37 minutes into the tie.

Last weekend’s hero Trent Alexander-Arnold swung a corner into the box from the right and found Van Dijk in the middle of the area, who smashed home a first time effort from around 12 yards out.

Van Dijk had the opportunity to double the Reds’ lead from another corner just three minutes later, but his headed was too high as the visitors headed into the half-time break one goal to the good.

Mohamed Salah had a quiet first 45 for his standards, but almost grabbed his 200th Reds goal after re-emerging for the second period. The Egyptian struck a right footed half-volley from Alexander-Arnold’s corner, but Wes Foderingham was equal to it and pulled off an excellent save to tip the shot over the bar.

Liverpool continued to press for a second and almost found it 15 minutes from time through second half substitute Darwin Nunez. Alexander-Arnold, involved once again, found the Uruguayan in the hosts’ box, but his first time effort was saved well by Foderingham before Gomez volleyed the rebound well wide of the mark.

Despite being a goal down, Sheffield United weren’t deterred and caused problems for the visiting defence, but after committing men forward in added time – Szoboszlai was on hand to convert Liverpool’s second of the evening.
