Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has unleashed a scathing critique of Premier League referees, insisting he “doesn’t like 80 percent of English referees.”
The outburst followed Brighton’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Sheffield United, where a contentious 69th-minute red card for midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud shifted the game’s dynamics.
Expressing his discontent, De Zerbi didn’t mince words, revealing, “I don’t like 80 percent of English referees. I don’t like their behaviour on the pitch.” The referee’s decision to send off Dahoud was a turning point that allowed Sheffield United to mount a comeback.

However, De Zerbi’s frustrations extend beyond this specific match, shedding light on ongoing grievances with English referees throughout his Brighton tenure. The Italian coach blasted the unpredictability of VAR decisions in England, contrasting it with other countries.
Post-match, De Zerbi bluntly stated, “England is the only country where, when there is VAR, you are not sure the decision is right. In other countries, you have to be sure the referee is 100 percent right. In England, no, I’m not able to understand.”
Despite the disappointing 1-1 draw with Sheffield United, Brighton’s overall trajectory remains positive. After the international break, they will face Nottingham Forest, with the opportunity to climb into the top six with a victory.
Meanwhile, the collective frustration towards VAR and officiating grows, particularly in the Premier League.
