Chelsea’s worst campaign in the Premier League came last season. The Blues finished 12th and ended on 44 points with a negative goal difference. This time last season they were on 20 points, this time they’re on 12. Could this be shaping up for their worst season in the Premier League?

Chelsea’s start to the season

Chelsea have made their worst start to a season since their 1978/79 campaign. They currently sit in 11th spot with just 12 points after 10 games. With no real sign of improvement and some tricky fixtures coming up things could go bad to worst for Chelsea.

However, they are still in the Carabao Cup which Mauricio Pochettino might be focusing on as it could lead to Chelsea’s only success of the season. With no European commitments, there’s no excuses for Pochettino to field a good team.

Putting the ball in the back of the net remains an issue for Chelsea as they are 10th in terms of goals being scored in the league. Clubs are finding it easy to keep Chelsea at bay as they’ve been unsuccessful in scoring in four of the 10 league games this season. There’s only been three games where they’ve scored more than once.

With conceding goals Chelsea don’t fare too badly with just 11 conceded. That’s the 15th lowest in the league.

Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures

Chelsea could find themselves slipping further and further down the table as upcoming league games don’t make great viewing. Here’s their next six Premier League fixtures:

Tottenham V Chelsea – 6th November – 8pm – Sky Sports

Chelsea V Man City – 12th November – 4:30pm – Sky Sports

Newcastle V Chelsea – 25th November – 3pm

Chelsea V Brighton – 3rd December – 2pm

Man Utd V Chelsea – 6th December – 8:15pm – Prime Video

Everton V Chelsea – 10th December – 2pm

Last season comparison

Chelsea made a much better start last season with six wins in their opening 10 fixtures. Todd Boehly took ownership of Chelsea in the summer and within the first month of the new season he sacked Thomas Tuchel even though he earned the Blues 10 points in six games.  That’s two points behind what Chelsea currently have after 10 games. Tuchel also lead Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 beating Man City 1-0 in the final.

Potter took over and didn’t do much better than Tuchel. He was sacked in April after a string of poor results. Man City eliminated Chelsea in both opening rounds of the Carabao and FA Cup.

Lampard took over for the rest of the season. He had Champions League left to fight for as Potter managed to get them to a Quarter-Final but Real Madrid booted them out of the competition.

Considering Chelsea were on 20 points after 10 games last season, it’s shocking to see they only managed another 24 points from the 28 matches that were left.

Since last summer, Boehly has put over a Billion Pounds into Chelsea’s spending but it appears they’re digressing in development.

Chelsea will hope to get back into European competition for next season even if it means the Europa Conference League.
