Alan Shearer believes Ezri Konsa will be the next player to receive an England call-up thanks to his form with Aston Villa.

Defender Konsa is part of an Aston Villa team exceeding everyone’s expectations in the Premier League. They’re also competing in the Conference League.

Konsa himself is also impressing, earning his starting spot even given the quality at Unai Emery’s disposal at centre-half. The 26-year-old is keeping Diego Carlos and Clement Lenglet out of the team this season.

With his fine form for his club, Konsa will be thinking about a potential England call-up and a trip to Germany next summer. Konsa will also take confidence in the fact England haven’t got a settled defence at the moment, with places well and truly up for grabs.

Shearer: “He’ll get in there I think.”

On ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, Shearer was asked about Konsa’s recent form for his club and a potential England call-up:

“How old is he now? 25 or 26.

“He is having a really good season and he was very good yesterday as well.

“I have him in my Team of the Week, so if he keeps on performing he won’t be ignored.

“I think that is pretty clear. If he keeps on playing the way he is, he is going to get mentioned [for England].

“So keep on playing well and he’ll get in there I think.”

Konsa and England

Konsa does have experience playing for England at youth levels. He has played seven games for the u21’s and five for the u20’s.

Konsa was part of the England u20 side that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He did only make a short sub appearance but being part of a winning England side at a tournament is a bonus with England look to end their trophy draught.
