It is now confirmed that Sandro Tonali will miss the rest of the season due to a 10-month ban that has been handed to him following a number of betting breaches whilst at AC Milan.
A double blow for the Italian as it also rules him out for the Euro 2024 tournament. There is still a wait on an official statement but it’s expected to be soon.
Tonali is still expected to play in tonight’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund. This is because the player’s lawyers have been negotiating with prosecutors and the football federation and an agreement is close but not expected to come into place before tonight’s game.
Fabrizio Romero confirmed that there will be additional months of participation in gambling rehab plan, same as on- loan Aston Villa man Nicolo Fagioli.
It’s understood that Tonali is free to train with the Newcastle team, he just can’t play in the squad. It’s expected that the midfielder will be back in the 2nd or 3rd week in the 2024/25 season.
Newcastle are preparing to take legal action over AC Milan in the sale of Tonali in the summer for £55m given the gambling circumstances that had already taken place.
