Olympiacos vs West Ham Preview and Prediction
West Ham return to the European stage in less than favourable circumstances after a painful 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa over the weekend, but as recent history has shown, they relish being back on the continent.
Last season’s Conference League winners have maintained their impeccable record in Europe this term, winning both of their opening games to give themselves a strong foundation for the remainder of the group stage.
They face arguably their toughest away fixture in the group on Thursday evening, however. The notoriously hostile Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was the setting for Olympiacos’ opening day 3-2 defeat against Freiburg, although that display should inspire a huge amount of confidence having fallen in the final four minutes.
However, the Hammers represent an entirely different prospect for the Greeks. After sweeping aside Freiburg at the beginning of the month, West Ham stretched their unbeaten record in Europe to 17 games – a new record among English clubs.
With an iron-clad record still intact, and Olympiacos proving susceptible to conceding, we expect West Ham to maintain their 100% record on Thursday – see below to find our specific betting tips.
Olympiacos vs West Ham Tips
- Over 2.5 Goals and West Ham to Win @ 41/20
- Jarrod Bowen to Score @ 49/20
- Combined Bet Builder Odds @ 23/5
Olympiacos vs West Ham Tip 1: Over 2.5 Goals and West Ham to Win
All four of Olympiacos and West Ham’s combined group stage games have seen over 2.5 goals, which suggests we should be treated to a similarly high-scoring affair.
Both sides have shown they are more than capable in front of goal, with tonight’s hosts scoring twice in each of their opening fixtures. They are also by far and away the highest scorers in the Greek top-flight having netted 23 in just six games.
West Ham meanwhile will want to squash any creeping doubts over their credentials tonight after conceding four at Villa last weekend. Aside from their 2-0 at Sheffield, they have also conceded two or more in four of their last five Premier League matches.
Nevertheless, it has proven a shrewd decision to isolate their European form from their domestic performances. The Hammers come alive on the continent, as their recent record shows, and they should have far too much tournament experience for Olympiakos who have struggled to see out their two fixtures so far.
Olympiacos vs West Ham Tip 2: Bowen to Score
Olympiacos will more than likely line up with 34-year-old Spanish left-back Quini, who will attempt to deal with a rejuvenated Jarrod Bowen.
Quini has already been booked on three occasions in the Europa League and will almost certainly have his hands full when coming up against Bowen, who has eight goal involvements in 10 games this season.
We are predicting him to get his first European goal of the season here.
