New ground was broken over the weekend, as sides at opposing ends of the table set new Championship points records.

Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday Set New Championship Points Records

Leicester’s impressive 3-1 victory away at Swansea on Saturday stretched their Championship points tally to 33 after 12 games.

In doing so they set a new record for most points won at this stage of the season, and are well on track to rival Reading’s overall record season haul from 2005/06.

Enzo Maresca has downplayed any suggestions that his side can steamroll the Championship in the same manner that Burnley did last season, who finished with 101 points and just three defeats.

Nevertheless, it is nigh-impossible not to draw comparisons with some of the league’s previous record breakers, given Leicester’s start to this campaign is unlike anything the Championship has ever witnessed.

It is also worth noting that had Ipswich won against Rotherham last Friday – a fixture that was postponed due to flooding – they too would have set a record new points total after 12 games.

The Foxes and the Blues are toppling everything and anything in their path, and the latter can put further distance between themselves and third-placed Leeds when they travel to Bristol on Wednesday evening.

The same can not be said at the foot of the table however. It has so far been a baptism of fire for newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday, who are sinking in the mire with no sign of escaping.

The Owls are glued to the foot of the table having failed to win any of their opening 12 games, picking up just three points in the process. Not only are they one of three teams in England’s top four leagues yet win a game this term, but their agonisingly late defeat at Watford last time out condemned them to an unfortunate place in the history books.

With just three points in 12 games, Wednesday set a new record for the lowest points tally at this stage of the Championship season.

Who Are the Championship Points Record Holders?

As mentioned, Reading’s record-breaking campaign from 2005/06 remains the Championship’s highest points tally.

The Royals succumbed to defeat on just two occasions that season, and also set a new league record of 33 games unbeaten – a run that stretched from the opening day right the way through to February 2006.

Although the 2023/24 campaign remains in its infancy, observers are already rating Leicester’s chances of surpassing the 106-point tally.

After edging past Sunderland in midweek their haul now stands at 36. There are 33 games left and a possible 99 points to claim, giving them plenty of room to breathe; the Foxes need 71 points in order to break the single-season record.

Who Has the Lowest Championship Points Record?

Having won just five of their 46 games whilst conceding 98 goals along the way, Rotherham’s 2016/17 campaign saw them register the lowest Championship points tally with 23.

Sheffield Wednesday will need to win 21 points from a possible 102 in order to better Rotherham’s unwanted record, starting this evening as they face a long trip to the south coast to face fellow struggles Plymouth.
