Wimbledon Day 1 Tips

The most important event on the tennis calendar is here, and in preparation for today’s action in South London, we have picked out a handful of our very own Wimbledon Day 1 tips and best bets.

Wimbledon Day 1 Tips

  • Laurent Lokoli vs Casper Ruud: Ruud to Win 3-1 @ 12/5
  • Andrey Rublev vs Max Purcell: Under 32.5 Games @ 4/5
  • Novak Djokovic vs Pedro Cachin: Both Players to Win a Set? NO @ 2/7

Back all three as a triple, at odds of 7/1 with Paddy Power below.

Wimbledon Day 1 Tip – Ruud to Win 3-1

Casper Ruud has made no secret of his preference for clay in the past, even claiming that ‘grass is for golfers.’

He also revealed that he has had trouble with hay fever on this surface in the lead up to this year, although it didn’t seem to bother him elsewhere – he is a three-time semi-finalist at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia which is surrounded by trees and flush gardens.

It is all a bit of a smokescreen to mask the fact that this is certainly not his favourite surface, and one he has notoriously struggled on in the past. Three of his eight matches on grass have resulted in defeat.

The three-time grand slam finalist has only ever managed to register a career-best second round finish at Wimbledon, but despite a lack of practice on grass, we imagine he will have more than enough firepower to sweep aside Laurent Lokoli, who makes his debut here as a qualifier aged 28.

Wimbledon Day 1 Tip – Rublev vs Purcell Under 32.5 Games

Number seven seed Andrey Rublev has never managed to secure safe passage past the fourth round, and he will be eager to flip his previous misfortunes on their head to finally make an appearance in the second week.

The Russian almost rounded off what could have been the best possible preparation for this year’s tournament, after a solid run to the final of the grass-court Halle Open in Germany last week.

He does come up against a player who knows how to win at Wimbledon, with Max Purcell entering the contest as a defending doubles champion.

Although we haven’t picked out a clear winner, we expect Rublev to overcome his opponent in less than 33 games after making light work of the majority of his opponents last week.

Wimbledon Day 1 Tip: Djokovic vs Cachin

There are simply not enough superlatives to describe odds-on favourite Novak Djokovic, who kicks off his bid to move level with Roger Federer’s record Wimbledon trophy haul of eight.

The 23-time grand slam winner goes toe-to-toe with 68th-ranked Pedro Cachin in the first round, who is yet to win a match on grass. The Argentine is an exceptional clay-courter, but it is hard to see how he can possibly keep up with Novak’s grass game, which many are now labelling as better than Federer.

Cachin doesn’t possess the chops on serve to buy himself enough time, and this should be a relatively straightforward three-set victory for the seven-time winner.
