After a month of World Cup action, the tournament comes to an end Sunday as France meet Argentina. Ahead of the big game, we’ve looked back at the top five goals scored in the World Cup final.
The World Cup final is often a tense affair, but only once in its long history has a game finished 0-0 after normal time and extra time.
Sunday will see Lionel Messi against club teammate Kylian Mbappé. The two are lethal goalscorers, so we’ll be expecting goals, but will there be any stunners like there is on this list? Let’s take a look at our top five World Cup final goals.
5. Zinedine Zidane, France vs Italy, 2006
When you think of Zidane and this game your mind will go straight to the headbutt.
However, Zidane scored a rather cheeky panenka penalty earlier on in the game. The goal makes our list because of the pure audacity Zidane showed to attempt a panenka in a World Cup final.
Things didn’t end well for Zidane as we all know. He was sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi and his side went on to lose the game. But his cheeky penalty attempt ranks as one of the best in World Cup history.
4. Andrés Iniesta, Spain vs Netherlands, 2010
Another game remembered for a none footballing incident rather than the quality of play.
Through the rough and tumble of this final, one man showed just why he’ll be remembered as a football legend.
Iniesta was found in acres of space, he flicked the ball up and smashed it into the back of the goal. The goal was made even sweeter by the fact it was the last minute of extra time when he slotted the ball home.
3. Geoff Hurst, England vs West Germany, 1966
There was some debate over Hurst’s second goal, but you can’t doubt his third goal.
With the game coming to a close and fans already on the pitch, Hurst smashed home his third to win England’s one and only World Cup.
The goal was capped by the legendary commentary by Kenneth Wolstenholme. “They think it’s all over – it is now!”.
2. Pele, Brazil vs Sweden, 1958
A fresh-faced 17-year-old Brazilian called Pele was the main talking point throughout the whole of the 1958 tournament.
In the final, Pele ensured his name would be forever etched in the World Cup history books.
He scored a fantastic goal that made him the youngest player to score in a final. The ball was hit hard into him, he controlled it on his chest, lobbed a defender and smashed the volley home.
The name Pele was announced to the world.
1. Carlos Alberto, Brazil vs Italy, 1970
Another Brazilian tops the list. Flying full back Carlos Alberto is regarded as one of the best right backs in the history of the game. He also scored one of the best goals the World Cup has ever seen.
In just eight passes Brazil went from one end of the pitch to the other. And there, on the end of move was Alberto to smash it home.
