Okay, just the two runners from the UK (or Ireland) heading over to the 2022 Melbourne Cup this year, but the pair are well-fancied and could even go off as the first and second favourites for the lucrative Flemington Park race.

DEAUVILLE LEGEND: @ 3/1 with BetUK
Trainer: James Ferguson
Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
Age: 3
Weight: 8-9
Draw: 9
Recent Runs: 12121

The likely Melbourne Cup favourite and could also create a bit of history if winning with Aussie jockey Kerrin McEvoy, of one-time Godolphin fame, riding. McEvoy has ridden the Melbourne Cup winner three times in the past (2000, 2016 and 2018) and needs just one more victory in the race to equal the four successes of Bobbie Lewis and Harry White – the two all-time winning most jockeys in the race.

Deauville Legend shot to the head of the Melbourne Cup 2022 betting market after romping away with the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on Aug 17th (watch below) – which was his third career win from only six starts.

He’s improved a bundle this season after starting his progression back in April with a maiden win over 1m2f at Windsor. This James Ferguson-trained 3 year-old will also be looking for become the third 3 year-old to win the Melbourne Cup in the last five years with Cross Counter (2018) and Rekindling (2017) the others, who were also UK/Irish-trained.

With 16 of the last 18 winners coming from stalls 5 or higher, then Deauville Legend’s draw 9 ticks this Melbourne Cup trend but those looking to take on this UK raider might look to the trip. All of Deauville Legend’s races to date have been over 1m5f or shorter, so he’ll be trying this 2m distance for the first time.

The other key Melbourne Cup stat that Deauville Legend will need to overcome is that 15 of the last 18 winners had raced in the last 4 weeks – his last race as 76 days ago.

Overall, he’s a worthy favourite that has top Group-winning form to his name. His run style suggests there could be more to come now upped in trip and with only six career runs there’s certainly room in the locker for more improvement. Yes, he’s got a few key Melbourne Cup trends to overcome, but looks a big player.

WITHOUT A FIGHT: @ 15/2 with BetUK
Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford
Jockey: William Buick
Age: 5
Weight: 8-10
Draw: 18
Recent Runs: 203112

At 5 year-olds old have plenty of experience under his belt and Without A Fight has won 7 of his 17 career starts (41%) and finished in the top three in 14 of those runs (82%). Therefore, it’s safe to say he’s a consistent horse and another big challenger from the UK.

Housed at the Simon and Ed Crisford yard in Newmarket, he was last seen on the track when running second in the Godolphin Stakes (Listed) at Newmarket and before that was a nice winner of the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup at York – you can see his races this year below.

Top jockey William Buick comes over for the ride and is getting the leg-up on the horse for the first time as he goes in search of his first winner in the Melbourne Cup.

Without A Doubt has been handed a good draw in 18 – the same berth as last year’s winner – Verry Elleegant! Yes, he’s another that is stepping up in trip, with the furthest he’s gone being 1m6f, but the good news for his backers is that he’s won his last two outings over 1m6f and so there is strong evidence to suggest the extra two furlongs here will suit.

His consistent profile – don’t forget he’s finished outside the first three only on three occasions from his 17 career runs – makes him a solid option ahead of the 2022 Melbourne Cup and looks sure to have a say in the closing stages.
