Jamie Redknapp and Alan Shearer took opposing sides with their view on Callum Wilson’s opener today.

Newcastle United moved up to fourth after beating Tottenham 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The main talking point from the game came from the opening goal.

Wilson collided with Hugo Lloris before chipping the ball into the net from outside the box. Lloris and his teammates weren’t happy with the on pitch decision, and even more upset when VAR agreed and allowed the goal.

The collison has divided opinion between players, fans and pundit. Speaking after the game, Redknapp said:

“I think it’s a foul, I think he impedes him,

“He (Lloris) comes out, Wilson bumps into him… unbelievable composure to score, but I think I would be so disappointed if I’m Spurs’ manager [or] players. Look at his arm there, it’s a foul. They bump into each other and he impedes him.”

On the other side, former Newcastle United striker Shearer disagreed with Redkanpp. On Twitter, Shearer said:

“Never a FK. Well done @CallumWilson.”

What Are Other Pundits And Ex-Players Saying?

Former Newcastle and Tottenham player Les Ferdinand agreed with Shearer:

“The goalkeeper would normally get the decision but I’m glad he didn’t

“They were both going together, as the ball goes over, great run, great ball, Lloris takes the touch and I don’t see where Wilson can go.”

Clinton Morrison speaking on BBC 5 Live said:

“The goal had to be given, Wilson didn’t move him arm into the goalkeeper.

“It’s controversial but for me the goal had to stand. Hugo Lloris should have just moved Wilson out of the way.”

It’s a decision that will be talked about over the next few days across the footballing world. It was a decision that changed the game and gave Newcastle United the confidence to go ahead and take three points.
