Chepstow Racecourse Events & Fixtures

Chepstow races today

We’re lucky to have races at Chepstow today at all . The brainchild of several businessmen and members of the local gentry, difficulty in raising funds to purchase the racecourse site on the Piercefield Park Estate near St Aravans outside the town of Chepstow on the River Wye in Monmouthshire meant there was a shaky start.

The area has ties to horse racing dating back beyond the August 1926 opening of Chepstow to the late Victorian period. At the time of The Great Depression, it was a struggle to make ends meet here. Less than a year after its inaugural meeting, the first fixture under the National Hunt code was held at this race track in March 1927.

Ever since then and right up to Chepstow races today, the course is used for jumps meetings in autumn, winter and early spring, and for Flat racing for the rest of the year. Once the site of Welsh versions of the Classics, like the Epsom Derby, Oaks and St Leger, Chepstow Racecourse events on the level were initially the most prestigious.

From Predominantly Flat to Mainly National Hunt

Things changed in the years following the Second World War, however, with National Hunt races rising to prominence. In 1949, Wales’s most important jumps race, the Welsh Grand National, switched to this track after the closures of Ely Racecourse in Cardiff and Caerleon at Newport. This prestigious race, now a Premier Handicap steeplechase, is the most important of all races at Chepstow today.

Originally taking place over Easter, the Welsh Grand National has been on a fixed date in the calendar of 27 December (the day after Boxing Day) since 1969. Another big event at this track is the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle. Inaugurated in 1977 and enjoying Grade 2 status, this contest is a highlights of the Jump Season Opener Weekend held on the second Friday and Saturday in October.

Configuration of Chepstow Races Today

Lying close to the Severn Estuary into which the River Wye flows, the left-handed and undulating oval of Chepstow Racecourse is almost two miles round for a complete circuit. There are extremes of going, depending on the time of year. During the winter months, the ground gets very heavy – so much so that, if the Welsh Grand National ends up being abandoned in its post-Christmas slot, there’s a card in January when it can be rescheduled for.

Over the summer, when the Flat racing at Chepstow takes place, there’s the opposite problem. Ground staff need to water the track believe it or not, including the mile-long straight course used for sprints and races up to that distance, so that underfoot conditions aren’t too firm. The run-in on the Flat is just over half-a-mile and much shorter for National Hunt events.

Hurdle races at Chepstow today see horses tackle seven flights on a complete circuit. There are four in the back straight on the climb up to the ruins of Piercefield House, then three more after turning for home. The final flight is less than a furlong from the line. That means there are 10 hurdles to jump in the Persian War and Grade 3 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle.

Steeplechasers in Chepstow races today have it a lot tougher. There are 11 fences to cross on a complete circuit with six fences down the back and five more coming up the home straight. Those include open ditches as the second one in each line. That means a total of 23 fences jumped in the Welsh Grand National including the last before the winning post three times.

Nassalam E/W, Welsh Grand National, Chepstow (27 Dec, 2:50)

The official Trial for the Welsh Grand National has actually proved a good pointer for recent renewals. On that basis, Nassalam looks value to become the latest horse to double-up in the big Chepstow Premier Handicap steeplechase over an extended 3m 6f in-between Christmas and New Year. Trained by Gary Moore, this six-year-old Dream Well gelding is 4lb well-in despite a penalty.

Nassalam was a good third in the New Year’s Day Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, bettering his sixth place in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last season. A standing dish in Premier Handicaps over shorter, he is thoroughly unexposed as a stayer. After being nearest at the finish when fourth over the famous Aintree fences in the Grand Sefton, he routed his rivals in South Wales last time out including the Midlands National hero Major Dundee.

The further than Nassalam went, the better he looked. It could be that the undulating and testing track of Chepstow over a marathon distance is precisely what he wants. He therefore has to be on any shortlist for the Welsh Grand National.

Iwilldoit Back to Regain Crown

After the defection of ante post favourite Monbeg Genius after penultimate declarations, Jamie Snowden’s Super Survivor heads the betting. Off a nice racing weight of 10st 5lb, the case for that one looks obvious. If Lingfield conqueror Git Maker goes in at Ascot over the weekend before Christmas, then the form of Super Survivor will have been franked.

The 2021 Welsh Grand National winner Iwilldoit is often at his best during midwinter, though, and topweight won’t faze connections. Trained by Sam Thomas, this 10-year-old son of Flying Legend is almost a stone higher in the weights than two years ago, but arrives with an excellent strike rate over fences and encouraging pipe opener over hurdles.

Iwilldoit won last season’s Classic Chase at Warwick off topweight. Although 6lb higher here than in January, he shaped very nicely on reappearance when conceding 16lb to Gentleman At Arms in a Pertemps Qualifier at Aintree. If that run has blown away the cobwebs, then Iwilldoit rates a big threat for a local yard.

The Big Breakaway Trying to Go One Better

Last year’s runner-up The Big Breakaway is 1lb lower in the weights than 12 months ago. Trained by Joe Tizzard, this eight-year-old Getaway gelding ran a blinder in defeat when conceding a massive 26lb to The Two Amigos. That effort may have bottomed The Big Breakaway, but he was only beaten by a length and a tail.

He hasn’t looked a natural over the Grand National fences at Aintree, so running there wasn’t exactly ideal preparation. The Big Breakaway wasn’t disgraced when fifth in the Badger Beers at Wincanton on reappearance, though, and this is the obvious race to target. If bouncing back, then he looks a solid each way bet.

Don’t Discount Standing Dish Truckers Lodge

After three placed efforts in the Welsh Grand National, it’d be churlish to ignore Truckers Lodge, who comes to Chepstow this time off the back of Sandown success. Trained by Paul Nicholls, who also has Coral Gold Cup flop Complete Unknown engaged, this 11-year-old son of Westerner has plenty to find with The Big Breakway on last season’s form.

Truckers Lodge arrives at this familiar place after landing the London National, however, and will again have Freddie Gingell taking the ride and 5lb off with his claim. A 4lb penalty puts this veteran on the same mark as 12 months ago, but he’s in better form this time around and thus worth considering each way on his track record.

Anything below Super Survivor in the weights shall run from out of the handicap here, provided Iwilldoit takes his chance. That is a major disadvantage for those lower down the scale in this long-distance festive feature where the market principals seemingly have it between them on all known form.
