What is the Copa America?
For many football fans, as touched upon, it’s the big international tournaments which are the most exciting events in the sport. It presents us with familiar players in unfamiliar teams, and gives us the chance to watch other players that we haven’t seen before. This appeal all holds true for bettors too, but experienced punters also savour the unique opportunities which such tournaments provide.
For British bettors, the closest equivalent to the Copa America is definitely the Euros. Entry into this competition is also geographically limited – in this case, to South America – although a couple of other ‘invited’ teams also appear. The structure is also similar, with a group stage being followed by several knockout rounds, until the overall champion is crowned.
Finally, the regularity of the Copa America is quite erratic. In theory, like the Euros, it’s supposed to be held every four years. In reality, the Copa America schedule is a little less predictable. Between 2007 and 2015, for example, the standard three tournaments were held. Between 2016 and 2021, however, there were another three tournaments in only five years.
Copa America Fixtures, Groups, Teams, Tables, Futures, and Draws
The general format of the Copa America will be straightforward enough for anyone familiar with the Euros. Even if you’ve only followed the World Cup or African Cup of Nations, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your head around the structure here.
The only slight difference between the Copa America and those other tournaments is that – in this case – there is no qualifying. There are only 10 teams in CONMEBOL (the South American equivalent of UEFA), after all, and all of them automatically gain entry for the Copa America. In addition, there have also been ‘invited’ Copa America teams in recent years, to swell the number of entrants. The most recent edition, for example, saw both Australia and Qatar (the previous two champions of the Asian Cup) invited, although – ultimately – both withdrew for logistical reasons.
The Copa de America, therefore, begins straight away with a group stage. The size of the Copa America groups depends on the number of entrants at that tournament (including invited Copa America teams). Regardless though, each team in the Copa America groups will play each other, and the top ones will go through to the next round.
After the Copa America groups have concluded, the knockout phase begins. This consists of three stages – quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final – with an additional play-off game to determine which Copa America teams finish third and fourth.
Finally, like other international tournaments, there are no fixed dates on which the Copa America is always held. That said, it does always take place in the summer (usually between June and July), which – while it is right in the middle of the South American domestic seasons – does allow Europe-based players to participate.
Copa America Finals
Like all cup competitions in football, the Copa America ultimately comes down to one big game. After battling through the Copa America groups stage and knockout rounds, the two finalists duel it out in one winner-takes-all matchup at the end.
The location for this depends on the host country, meaning that – if things break right – a finalist can effectively end up playing in front of their home crowd. Indeed, in the last eight editions of the competition, the host country has made the Copa America final in four of them, and – in turn – won on three of those occasions.
Elsewhere, as with finals in other tournaments, a draw after 90 minutes of the Copa America final will see the game go to extra time, then a penalty shootout. This has actually happened in a hefty three of the last seven tournaments, at the time of writing, with Chile winning back to back titles in 2015 and 2016 via penalties.
How We Rank Copa America Betting Sites
As you surely know, there are a whole lot of betting sites out there which cover football in the UK. In turn, just about all of those will provide markets on the Copa America every time it rolls around. Sorting through all these options is a time-consuming process, which is why we’ve done the hard work for you, with these being five of our most important criteria.
- Betting MarketsIt goes without saying that all of our recommended sites cover the Copa America. The actual quality of that coverage, however, has helped to separate our chosen brands from the competition. The first thing we check is that every single Copa America game is covered, both pre-match and in-play. Not only that, but we also prefer sites offering outright markets, such as Overall Winner and Copa America Top Scorer. Finally, on a per-game basis, we rewarded bookies providing the widest possible range of markets, including both player and team props. Even amongst some heavy competition, we were particularly impressed with the Copa America betting markets available on Bet365.
- Special FeaturesA broad selection of betting markets is a ‘must-have’. Technically, special features don’t fall into this category, but they can still greatly enhance the experience of betting on Copa America results. The inclusion of live streaming is a big bonus here, for reasons we’ll cover shortly. We also like bookies to provide pre-game and live statistics to help punters inform their picks, and high quality tools to both place and cash out wagers are enormously important. Last but not least, a good bet builder can also prove extremely useful when it comes to crafting same-game multiples. In some cases - with bookies like 888sport - you’ll find all these features and more.
- Bonus OffersWe’ll cover Copa America betting offers in an upcoming section. For now, simply know that these deals are more important than you might think, since they really can have an impact on your long-term betting success. Some will do so by helping to increase your winnings, while others seek to reduce your losses. Either way, it adds up to more money in your betting account over the long haul. Plenty went into our assessment of the offers provided by our recommended bookies. In general we tried to look far beyond the headline figure, instead assessing the overall value of the deal once the terms and conditions had been taken into account. FansBet performed especially well in this key department.
- Mobile AppsThe mobile revolution had a seismic impact on the betting industry. Nowadays, mobile devices have overtaken desktop computers as the preferred method for many punters to place their wagers. Because of this, we scrupulously studied the mobile features provided by our recommended Copa America betting sites. Whether a downloadable app was offered, or simply a mobile website, we tested the platform extensively and assessed it for usability, features, reliability, and more. Betfred, in particular, passed each test with flying colours.
- Player ProtectionWhenever you use a bookie for Copa America betting, you’ll be trusting them with both your personal information and - of course - your money. As you do so, you’ll obviously want to feel as if both are being protected. We made sure to check the security measures being taken by all of our recommended Copa America betting sites. We also ensured that they held at least one license with a reputable regulatory body, naturally, and studied their wider reputation among both experts and regular users. A bookie like BoyleSports not only ticks all these boxes, but also has an excellent long-term track record.
Copa America Betting Odds
It’s a simple fact that many bettors, particularly those who are less experienced, don’t really understand how odds are calculated for the Copa de America. We say this without judgement, since - on a surface level - most people probably think that Copa America betting prices are based on probabilities. In reality, however, this is only one of several different important factors.
Sheer probability does indeed play a factor, with bookies using all manner of data to calculate the chances of a certain outcome taking place. Even in the case of a market with a clear 50/50 chance of coming true, however - such as a pre-game coin-flip - the sportsbook won’t actually give even odds. Instead, you might get 10/11 on both heads and tails. This is called a ‘vig’, or ‘overround’, and its insertion into Copa America betting odds helps the bookie to ensure that it will turn a profit overall.
Another key component of Copa America betting odds is the amount of action a particular market is receiving. If the bookie wants more punters to bet on an outcome, they’ll raise the price to make it more appealing. The opposite is also true, if too much action is coming in, and the bookie wants to limit its exposure.
The final major factor in Copa America betting odds is the prices being listed by the bookie’s competition. Quite simply, no single brand wants to offer odds that are significantly higher or lower than the other sportsbooks; again, this would likely drive too much or not enough action respectively. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why Copa America odds can often change so quickly after they’re initially posted.
Some of the most popular Copa America betting odds revolve around the Overall Winner of the competition. Committed punters can get these wagers down weeks or months in advance. At the time of writing, we’re unfortunately too far out from the 2024 Copa America cup for UK bookies to be providing odds. Check back closer to the summer of 2024, however, when we’ll have these prices up for you.

Copa America Final 2024 Betting
We certainly wouldn’t advise you to stick purely to one game in your Copa America gambling. To do so would see you missing out on a whole range of betting opportunities.
With that being said, the last game serves not only as the finale to the tournament, but to your Copa America betting too. As such, it makes sense to pay the game plenty of attention, and ensure you’ve still got funds saved for it in your sportsbook account.
Certain bookies will provide special offers and boosted odds for the Copa America final, and we’d recommend capitalising on these if you can. You should also make sure you take advantage of the large volume of analysis and advice which will be out there during the build-up. Don’t be afraid to do your own research too, however, and draw your own conclusions. By a simple look at the Copa America table in the previous section, for example, you can see that three of the last seven finals have gone to penalties. Predicting that the next one follows suit could be a savvy wager.
Top Copa America Betting Tips
Obviously - as with all forms of gambling - there’s no guarantee you’ll make money from your Copa America betting. With that being said, there are certainly still steps you can take to boost your chances, with these being five of the best examples.
Have a Plan
The worst approach you could have to your Copa America betting is to simply go in all-guns-blazing, putting down wagers and setting your stakes more or less at random. We’d recommend taking a much more considered approach instead.
The easiest way to do this is by creating a staking plan. Work out how much money you’re willing to wager across the entire Copa America cup, then the number of wagers you’d like to place in total. Divide the first number by the second to calculate your average stake size, then stick as closely as possible to this figure thereafter to ensure you stay in the game throughout the tournament.
Mix It Up
If you’re just starting out betting on Copa America fixtures, it’s fine to stick with the most basic bet types of all, like Match Result. As you grow more comfortable, however, we’d highly recommend branching out and trying new bet types.
There are two advantages to this. Firstly, it simply helps to keep your betting more fresh and fun. Secondly, it gives you a better mix of risk and reward; the occasional successful long-shot can make up for plenty of smaller losses, after all.
Do Your Research
Don’t simply go with your gut when making Copa America betting picks. Instead, every wager you make should be the result of considered thought and research.
There’s a huge amount of information out there to help you with this nowadays, including statistics, form tables, analytical pieces by experts, and so on. We’d advise you to read as much of this as you can before every game you’re interested in for the Copa America schedule. You can then use it to inform your pre-match bets, and to help guide your in-play wagers once the action is underway.
Watch the Games
If you’re serious about your Copa America betting, and you possibly can, you should try to watch as many Copa America fixtures for yourself as you possibly can.
Most importantly, this will help to supplement the knowledge gained during your aforementioned research. There’s still a place for the ‘eye test’ when it comes to evaluating players and Copa America teams, after all, even with all the data that’s available nowadays. In addition, watching the action simply makes the whole experience more enjoyable and exciting – a factor which really shouldn’t be overlooked.
Stay Responsible
Remember, at all times, that your Copa America betting is supposed to be fun. As soon as it starts to feel like an obligation instead, it’s time to step away and take a break. If you’re still continuing to struggle, take advantage of one of the many resources which top bookies provide to help – such as time-outs and self-exclusion – or seek help from another source.
Popular Copa America Betting Markets
In terms of sheer numbers, Copa America fixtures won’t usually provide quite as many betting options as Premier League games, which often feature several hundred per match. That said, in reality you’ll still have more than enough choices to pick from, all of which can generally be split into these three categories.
Team-Based Wagers
This is the most popular category of Copa America betting markets. We’d recommend sticking to it when you’re just getting started, and - even after you’ve grown more comfortable - these wagers should still form the bedrock of your strategy.
The most famous bet type of all here is Match Result, which - despite its simplicity - certainly shouldn’t be overlooked. Other popular examples include Over/Under Goals, Both Teams to Score, and Double Chance, all of which tend to be relatively safe picks.
Player Props
If you want to get a little more specific with your Copa America betting, compared to what team-based wagers might offer you, then player props might be right up your street.
As the name suggests, these involve betting on individual players rather than entire teams. They tend to be inherently more risky, but - accordingly - provide bigger payouts when they do work out. Goalscorer picks - like Anytime Goalscorer - are the most popular examples, but you can also wager on the likes of First Goalscorer, To Be Carded, and more.
Outright Bets
These are the longest-term options for your Copa America betting, by far. If you prefer to take a more patient approach to your gambling, therefore, outrights could be perfect.
Typically, an outright wager will cover an entire Copa America tournament. The most famous example is obviously Copa America Winners, but Top Goalscorer can also be an extremely fun pick.
One of the most intriguing challenges with outrights is your timing. The markets themselves open weeks or months before the tournament, and this is often when you get the best odds. The longer you wait, the more information (on injuries, form, and so on) you’ll have, but the prices will also - usually - continue to fall.
Copa America Betting Offers
Special offers should be made into a major part of your Copa America gambling. High quality deals can help save you money or boost your winnings, both of which are obviously helpful to your success.
Bookies won’t tend to offer many Copa America-specific deals - not as many as for the Euros or World Cup, anyway. That said, all the regular football bonuses they provide should also be available for the Copa America cup, and you can check out some of the best examples below.
Early Payout Deals
This has an argument to being the very best special offer in football. It’s understandably rare - with Bet365 being one of the few brands to provide it - but we’d recommend grabbing it wherever and whenever you can.
Normally, you obviously need to wait for a match to finish before you claim any winnings. With an Early Payout deal, this is no longer the case. Instead, when a certain criteria is satisfied, your wager will automatically be counted as a winner. With Bet365, for example, an eligible Match Result pick will ‘win’ if your chosen team goes two goals up at any point.
Price Boosts
We went over bet pricing earlier in this article. Those odds can once again change, however, courtesy of Copa America price boosts. There are two main ways this occurs.
The most common is for the bookie to artificially inflate their own odds on a market, in an effort to drive action. If ‘Messi to Score and Argentina to Win’ was only 3/1, for example, and wasn’t getting much attention, the sportsbook might bump it up to 5/1.
The other way is that you may also be given your own price boosts, which you can apply to whichever markets you please. This is much less common, but - since you get more flexibility - definitely preferable.
Limited Time Offers
As noted, British sportsbooks don’t tend to give as much love to the Copa America as they do to the Euros, for example. That said, some of the bigger brands will still occasionally put special, limited-time offers in place for the competition, and especially for the final.
The specifics of these will vary from brand to brand. Many will enhance certain markets, while some might give you free bets to spend, or insure your wagers. Regardless, it’s definitely worth checking the Promotions sections of your favourite bookies - throughout the Copa America - to see what special offers they have.
Copa America Live Streaming Sites
As touched upon earlier, we would highly recommend not just betting on Copa America results, but watching the games too if you can. This will allow you to spot in-play betting opportunities, improve your future picks, and - quite simply - make the whole experience more fun.
Assuming you’re based in the UK, it’s actually extremely easy to watch the Copa America live. The 2021 edition was covered in its entirety by the BBC. This meant that (assuming you have a TV license) you could watch every single game free of charge, via your TV, the BBC Sport website, or the iPlayer app. Hopefully, the same will be true for the next Copa America.
In addition, the Copa America’s relatively relaxed TV rights meant that sportsbooks also showed the 2021 tournament. On Bet365, for example, you could watch the Copa America live - including the final - via the app or website. All you needed to do was have either placed a bet within the prior 24 hours, or have a funded sports betting account. Again, we’d expect this to also be the case for the 2024 Copa America.
Final Thoughts
The Copa America really is one of the great footballing competitions. It brings together an entire continent (along with some ‘guest’ nations), and allows British viewers to watch some of the biggest stars in the game competing for their home countries.
By also betting on the Copa America results, you can enhance both your excitement and involvement in the tournament. After reading this article, you now have all the information you need in order to do just that. Your only remaining tasks are to pick one of our recommended sportsbooks, create an account, grab its welcome offer, and start betting on the Copa America for yourself.
