Tottenham Hotspur eager to improve Champions League record

Tottenham Hotspur host Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday aiming to prove they can be a force in the Champions League.

Spurs haven’t progressed past the last 16 in this competition since 2011 and they will be eager to improve that record against the Bundesliga side.

Eric Dier and Erik Lamela have returned to training ahead of the game, but Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Ben Davies remain on the sidelines.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Danny Rose won’t start the match, although he may be included on the bench.

Dortmund have major concerns over Marco Reus who has a muscle injury, while Lukasz Piszczek is doubtful with a heel problem.

The two sides have faced each other four times previously, with their first meeting coming in the last 16 of the 2015/16 Europa League.

Dortmund won 3-0 in Germany and followed up with a 2-1 away victory to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Spurs gained their revenge in the group stage of the 2017/18 Champions League, winning 3-1 at Wembley and 2-1 away from home.

Predicted starting line-ups:

Tottenham: Lloris; Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Aurier, Winks, Sissoko, Eriksen, Son, Llorente, Lamela.

Dortmund: Burki, Piszczek, Weigl, Diallo, Hakimi, Witsel, Delaney, Gotze, Sancho, Alcacer, Guerreiro.
