Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull has revealed that the failed move to Celtic has saved his career.

The 20-year-old was very close to joining the Scottish giants last summer but he failed the medical because of an issue with his knee.

The player had to undergo surgery and he was sidelined for eight months.

Turnbull claims that he even spoke to Neil Lennon and the move was close to completion.

The midfielder believes that it was a blessing in disguise. If the problem had not surfaced, it could have ended his career in the near future.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “But you do start to realise that it was a bit of a blessing in disguise that I got the medical done and the issue showed up. It could have ended my career. I look at it that way now. It sort of saved me.”

The Celtic medical flagged up the concern and he managed to address the problem with the surgery.

Turnbull was one of the best midfielders in the league before his surgery and it will be interesting to see if he can regain that sharpness and form.

He is 20 and he will get plenty of chances to move to a bigger club if he recovers fully.

Celtic could use a goalscoring midfielder like him and if he gets back to form, the Hoops might just come calling once again in the future.
