Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital this summer and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United are both monitoring his situation.

But this is not the first time the French striker has been a target for Manchester United. Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed that few years ago when Benzema joined Real Madrid, the club received two offers.

Manchester United submitted a better offer than Real Madrid, but Aulas says that the player requested to join Los Blancos and therefore Lyon granted his wish.

Aulas said: “We had two offers, one from Manchester United, which was higher than that of Real, but Karim came to me and said: ‘President, Real makes me dream since I was small’. So if a player says ‘I have an offer that allows me to play in one of the four best European clubs’,  I do not know what we will do. It will not be degraded to a price but maybe we will accept it.”

Real Madrid have been linked with Aubameyang and Lewandowski this summer and it will be interesting to see if they decide to get rid of Benzema. The French international has been suffering from injuries and controversy over the last few months and is set to miss this summer’s Euros as well.

Benzema will be a fantastic acquisition for any club in world football and Manchester United should definitely try their luck once again if he is made available. With Mourinho at the helm now, it could just be possible for them to land the world class forward, even without Champions League football.
