Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has claimed that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is the best player in the Championship this season.
The 24-year-old has been arguably the most consistent player for Leeds this season and has been simply sensational. He has progressed immensely under Marcelo Bielsa, and his wide range of passing has earned him the moniker ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’.
There have been calls from fans and pundits for England manager, Gareth Southgate, to consider Phillips in the national team set-up.
Goodman named Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic as his player of the season.
“Scoring 23 goals in 34 games speaks for itself,” Goodman wrote on Sky Sports. “You look at West Brom and they have players chipping in from everywhere, but Fulham don’t have that.
“He has scored 23 of their 52 goals, which is monumental. It shows how reliant they are on him and the massive burden on his shoulders, and that is why he is my Player of the Season.
“It is almost a reluctant choice as I really do believe Kalvin Phillips has been the best player in the league. They are both important to their sides but in different ways.
“But, as is tradition, strikers always get the glory. That is the way it is always been, and the way it always will be!”
Phillips, once again, has been linked with a move away from Leeds, with clubs like Tottenham Hotspur being reportedly keen to sign the defensive midfielder.
There have been interests from other Premier League clubs as well, but Phillips has recently suggested that he wants to stay at Leeds next season and for the rest of his career as well.
The Whites are leading the Championship table – one point clear of West Brom and seven points ahead of third-placed Fulham — with nine matches to go.
Leeds will be looking to avoid the play-offs after having suffered a defeat in the semi-final against Derby last year.
