Reading have agreed to sign John O’Shea.
The 37-year-old O’Shea had hoped to stay on with Sunderland despite the club enduring back to back relegation.
However, the club has opted not to renew his contract which expires and O’Shea will officially be a Royals player on July 1st.
O’Shea ended his international career for the Republic of Ireland during the weekend and this happened on a good note as they managed a 2-1 win against the USA.
While O’Shea is past his peak, he is still able to compete at the highest level as evidenced by the fact that he managed to play 40 times for Sunderland last season.
He will also bring in experience, leadership and a winning mentality to the Royals side who placed 20th during the past Championship campaign.
After the conclusion of next season, O’Shea is expected to be offered an opportunity to join the Royals coaching staff.
Reading boss Paul Clement is confident that O’Shea will bring value to his side.
He said: “John has played and won at the very highest level – he has won five Premier League titles, been part of a European Cup-winning side and earned 118 caps for his country.
“He will bring us fantastic levels of experience and proven leadership qualities.
