Rams vs 49ers Preview
En route to the NFC Championship Game, the Rams have been in fine fettle to date, winning the NFC West with a 12-5 record and then disposing of the Arizona Cardinals in the Wild Card round, winning 34-11.
Against the Cardinals, QB Matthew Stafford threw for 202-yards; two TDs, and no interceptions. The former Lion linked up well with receivers Cooper Kupp (61-yards, one TD) and a now in-form Odell Beckham Jr (54-yards, one TD).
RB1 Cam Akers returned from injury in that same game and posted 95-yards from scrimmage in his first game back, and the Rams defense, bolstered by Von Miller, teed off on a shellshocked-looking Kyler Murray and the Cardinals offense, sacking the Arizona QB twice, hitting five TFLs, and forcing Kliff Kingsbury’s team into third and long situations time and time again.
Next up for the Rams were Tom Brady’s Buccaneers, the defending Super Bowl champions…
Particularly in the early goings of the game, it was much the same story as it was vs the Cardinals. Sean McVay’s team proved too hot to handle on both sides of the ball and, at half time, was up 20-3.
Led by the GOAT, Tom Brady, who picked himself up from three sacks and six QB hits, the Bucs fought back in the second half. But hearts were left broken at the Raymond James Arena when K Matt Gay’s 30-yard field goal flew over in the final seconds to give the Rams a deserved, 30-27, victory in a game they dominated for large portions and that would have been sewn up much earlier if not for handling errors from Kupp (183-yards; we’ll give him a pass!) and Akers in the fourth.
Next up for the Rams, it’s a division rival the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers qualified in third place in the NFC West after the Rams imploded on the final day of the regular season, throwing away a 17 point first-quarter lead and losing the game 27-24.
No team has had a more difficult route to the Conference final either – the 49ers have already beaten the heavily fancied Dallas Cowboys, 23-17, and an Aaron-Rodgers (x2MVP?) led Green Bay Packers, 13-10.
Against the Cowboys, the 49ers’ defense made life tough for Dak Prescott behind the line. Nick Bosa and co. sacked the Dallas QB five times and kePT his pass percentage down at around 50%. This, coupled with a fine running game on offense (Elijiah Mitchell – 96-yards; one TD; Deebo Samuel 72-yards; one TD), was enough to give San Francisco an early lead and, to be honest, until Nick Bosa and Fred Warner went off injured (and Jimmy Garoppolo threw that God-awful pick), the Cowboys offense looked clueless.
Against the Packers in last week’s Divisional Round, 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo again had his issues. Garoppolo went 11/19 for 131-yards and an interception and never looked comfortable in the snow. But, Kyle Shanahan’s defense came to the fore, limiting Green Bay to just three points in 50 minutes of play – at the Lambeau Field of all places! And, by the time Robbie Gould converted the game-winning FG, few could have denied San Francisco the W.
But, can Kyle Shanahan navigate one more tough away day to take the 49ers to their second Super Bowl appearance in three years?
Well, history would certainly back the 49ers coach for success where that question is concerned: Shanahan is 6-0 vs McVay in the NFC West since the two men assumed control of their respective franchises.
But, will injuries play a part this time around?

Rams vs 49ers Team News
Sean McVay will certainly hipe to have LT Andrew Whitworth back on the offensive line. The veteran OT has been dealing ankle/knee injuries and missed last weekend’s win against the Bucs. Whitworth has, however, been in full-contact training this week and is expected to feature.
WR Van Jefferson and S Taylor Rapp are both questionable to feature come Sunday. But, with Conference honors on the line, expect to see both players suit up for the Rams.
All in all, there are most certainly bigger concerns on the injury front for Shanahan’s 49ers:
Rookie-RB Elijah Mitchell is struggling with a knee injury and was just a limited participant in Thursday’s practice session. Plus, arguably the NFL’s best OT, Trent Williams, left the game vs Green Bay early with an ankle sprain. Williams is also questionable to feature for the offense.
On the defensive side of things, both DE Nick Bosa and LB Fred Warner emerged from the Packers clash unscathed after entering the ruckus carrying light knocks, which is a huge boost for San Francisco fans. In an alternative reality where Aaron Donald didn’t exist, cases could be made for both players to win DPOTY.
NFC Conference Championship Picks: Rams vs 49ers
From a betting perspective, I hate to call a game like this:
The Rams won the toughest division in the NFL this year and just knocked out last year’s Super Bowl winners on their home patch. QB Matthew Stafford is looking every bit like the signal-caller McVay wanted when he traded first-round picks with the Detroit Lions to bring him to the SoFi back in the preseason. And, in Cooper Kupp, they boast the NFL’s best receiver (+240-yards in two playoff games). And that’s before you factor in Aaron Donald and Von Miller on D!
However, Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers just seem to have McVay’s number – it’s hard to excuse the 0-6 record, particularly so quickly after that capitulation from the Rams in Week-18.
As such, we’re backing the 49ers to win the game and we’re taking the underdog on the moneyline for better odds.
