Ryan Giggs has signed a new-one year contract extension with Manchester United which will tie him to the Old Trafford club until June 2014.
The 39-year-old, undoubtedly the most decorated player in British football history, will complete his 23rd season as a first team player while his next appearance will be 1,000th senior appearance, a landmark achievement for any footballer, albeit it includes games for Wales and Team GB at the London Olympics as well.
Sir Alex Ferguson has only deep respect for the Welshman. The Scotsman was quoted on the BBC Website:
“What can I say about Ryan that hasn’t already been said? He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being.
“He has fantastic energy for the game and it is wonderful to see.
“Ryan seems to reach a new milestone every week, and to think that he now has 23 unbroken years of league goals behind him is truly amazing in the modern-day game.
“His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract.”
Giggs made his United debut on 2nd March 1991 and has scored 168 goals in 931 appearances for the Old Trafford club.
In his illustrious career at Manchester United, he has achieved 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cup trophies, three League Cup trophies and two Champions League titles.
Giggs told the club’s official website:
“I am feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team.
“This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season.”
The only sad part about his glittering career remains the fact that he never got the chance to test himself at the highest level in international football, i.e. the World Cup. He has captained Great Britain at last summer’s Olympics in London and won 64 international caps for Wales before retiring from international duty in 2007.
Apart from his longevity, which in itself a huge admirable quality, Ryan Giggs will also be remembered for becoming the only footballer to have scored in each of the 21 Premier League seasons.
