Bayern Munich will clinch their 22nd German league championship in the beautiful Olympic Stadium which played host to the FIFA World Cup final four years ago. The Bavarians travel to the German capital on Saturday to face relegated Hertha Berlin where they have a three point lead over second placed Schalke, but have a far more inferior goal difference over The Knappen of seventeen goals.
It is only the first piece of a jigsaw that could see Bayern clinch a monumental treble as they are also in the German Cup final, which incidentally is also in the Olympic Stadium, and the Champions League final where manager Louis Van Gaal goes head to head with his former assistant in Catalonia, Jose Mourinho.
Club captain Mark Van Bommel is set to make history as he will be the first foreign captain in the club’s 120 year history to lift the league championship. The Dutch international once captained Holland’s PSV Eindhoven to three league titles prior to his move to Spain with Barcelona in 2005. The 33 year old is honoured to be involved in another chapter in The Reds storied history.
The Bayern Munich captain said:
“It’ll be a very special experience for me.”
“I was captain in Eindhoven for three championship triumphs, and this is my first with Bayern.”
“It’s terrific, and it makes me very proud.”
As good as an achievement this is, van Bommel remains determined and focused on Bayern’s future projects with the two cup finals in their sights.
“We have to keep our foot to the floor.”
“Once you’ve lost momentum, it’s hard to pick it up again.
“This is an opportunity you may only have once in an entire career.”
In contrast to Saturday’s opponents, Hertha Berlin are bowing out of Germanys top flight leaving the capital city without a top flight outfit.
