Steve Coppell will be “amazed” if James gets another England cap

Bristol City manager Steve Coppell has said he would be “amazed” if recent signing David James were to be selected for another England international cap.

James, who turned 40 yesterday, made his way to Ashton Gate on a free transfer after former club Portsmouth chose not to renew his contract. The move came just a month after the goalkeeper returned from the World Cup with Fabio Capello’s team. New boss Coppell however, is expecting the 4-1 thrashing to Germany to be the veterans final England cap:

“I suspect there’s going to be a sea change so I wouldn’t have thought Fabio Capello would use any of the old guard. I’d be very surprised if David was selected. In fact I’d be amazed.”

England’s next game, a test against Hungary, is set to take place at Wembley on Sunday, August 8. The goalkeepers jersey seems to be available for grabs, after Rob Green’s blunder in South Africa.
