Manchester United had previously made a failed attempt to sign Athletico Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera. However, it now appears there may be chance to procure his signature before the summer transfer window closes.
While many thought the protracted deal for the Premier League champions to sign Herrera was over, Athletico Bilbao manage Ernesto Valverde has hinted the young Spaniard may yet leave the side after suggesting Herrera is not in the right frame of mind to play for Bilbao.
‘There has been quite a stir surrounding Ander. Whether he plays or not is another question. It is the decision of the manager. I’ve spoken to him about his state of mind to play.’
Manchester United manager David Moyes made signing a central-midfielder his number one priority this summer, but has failed in his quest so far to do so.
With less than 48 remaining for clubs to wrap up deals for players, The Red Devils are cutting it fine to procure Herrera’s signature. He made 29 La Liga appearances last season, and is yet to represent the Spain national team.
The Spaniard has been named on the bench for Bilbao’s clash against Real Madrid which has further added to the already ongoing speculation about his future.
Herrera’s talent isn’t in question, but it’s whether Manchester United are willing to pay his pricey valuation. Bilbao won’t accept a penny less than his €36M clause in his contract. Manager David Moyes is pondering his options, but is unsure of whether he’s willing to part with such an amount to sign him.
Ander Herrera is said to be keen on a move, but will do it respectfully as his club would wish. He won’t make any public statements revealing any desire to leave the club, nor does he want to mislead the fans of his attentions.
His future could be sorted out in the next 24 hours or even less.
