Last season was one of the most exciting Bundesliga seasons ever, and many players had fantastic seasons. Well the Bundesliga is back and this season has the potential to better the quality of last season after high profile additions like Raul who left Real Madrid to join Schalke and Michael Ballack who, after being released from Chelsea, decided to return to his homeland and join Bayer Leverkusen.
But which young players have the potential to break into their clubs first team and make a name for themselves?
Lewis Holtby (Mainz)
Holtby spent the end of last season on loan at Bochum from Schalke, and despite playing brilliantly he couldn’t help the club escape relegation. To gain more experience he has been loaned out again this season, to Mainz, who stayed up last season despite being strongly tipped to go down. If he can perform like he did at Bochum this could be a great season for the nineteen-year-old.
Levan Kenia (Schalke)
The nineteen-year-old Georgian made his international debut at the age of sixteen and has made fourteen appearances since, scoring three goals. At club level he has made eleven appearances for Schalke and could have made more if he hadn’t had been ruled out with injury last season. His superb skill and speed will be put to the test in the Champions League this year against some of the best defenders in the World.
David Alaba (Bayern Munich)
At the age of eighteen, Alaba has already played in the Champions League, Bundesliga and played international football for Austria. After Mark Van Bommel’s departure it looks like Alaba will be the one to take his spot in Bayern’s impressive midfield. He will definitely be a top class player in the future and that’s good news for Austria who haven’t had a significantly great player for quite a long time.
Tobias Sippel (Kaiserslauten)
With over seventy appearances so far, Sippel is the most experienced of these players. The 22-year-old goalkeeper will have to be on top form if Kaiserslauten are to survive, and many people say that if he can keep them up he will be the Germany goalkeeper in the future. Sippel was a key player in Kaiserslauten’s promotion and know has an opportunity to become a better player, if he does bigger clubs will come knocking.
The Bundesliga season starts on Friday and these are not the only youngsters who are going to do well this year. The German top flight was instrumental in making Germany’s young World Cup stars better players and the youngsters of the Bundesliga will know they have a chance if they perform well enough.
