Bayern Munich President Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed that the German side rejected a big money offer from Manchester United for Thomas Muller in the summer transfer window. Manchester Evening News has claimed that the Red Devils made a series of bids to sign the German striker with the last offer being thought to be more than £70m.
It is well known that United manager Louis Van Gaal is a huge admirer of the 25-year-old and wanted to bring in the striker to solve his team’s goalscoring woes up front. In fact, Van Gaal played a key role in developing Muller while he was at the managerial helm at Bayern Munich.
Though Van Gaal has remained tight lipped about Muller throughout the summer, Rummenigge has finally opened up on the negotiations between United and Bayern. The 59 year old said, “I’m talking about figures which were very high indeed. If I were a bank manager then I would have had to accept it.”
“But as a football club we allowed ourselves to close the door on it, and this door is remaining closed. I can promise that to everybody. But one thing is for certain, in view of the increased television money in England things are not going to get any easier for Bayern in future.”
Muller has made a terrific start in the Bundesliga having already scored five goals in Bayern’s first three Bundesliga fixtures. United later signed 19 year old French youngster Anthony Martial on deadline day by paying an initial £36m to Monaco. However including add ons, the fee could go up to £58m (€80m).
The hefty price tag is bound to put martial under immense pressure when he takes the field but the youngster has claimed that he is ready to prove his worth. On the flipside, had United been able to seal a record deal for Muller, it would have been headlines in the making. And United were close to making one…
