Premier League official Howard Webb has been given the nod by UEFA to referee Saturday’s Champions League final that will see both Inter Milan and Bayern Munich chasing astonishing trebles – both teams having already won their respective domestic league and cup titles.
Webb, who has already been selected to referee at this summer’s World Cup, is currently enjoying a steady growth in his reputation within world football circles after seeing his domestic standing arguable begin to wane slightly during the last month of the Premier League season, due to some high-profile errors of judgement.
This will be the first time Webb (who qualified as an international referee in 2005) has been eligible to referee the showpiece match, as at least one English team has reached each of the last five Champions League finals.
A statement released by UEFA today confirmed the appointment;
“The [Champions League final] will be handled by English referee Howard Melton Webb, who has been an international referee since 2005 and has officiated in total 47 UEFA matches in his refereeing career.
At the final in Madrid, Webb will be assisted by his fellow countrymen Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann. The fourth official will be Martin Atkinson, also from England.”
The Yorkshire-born referee has already taken charge of six Champions League fixtures prior to the final this season, including Inter’s quarter-final first-leg tie against CSKA Moscow.
