If I was to ask any football enthusiastic who the best two teams in England were 10 years ago, with no hesitation I would be told that Manchester United and Liverpool were those teams.
Always attracting the best footballers and playing the best football. These teams have one of the best track records in the world, with many European and domestic trophies just a small part of that history and filling out their allocation has never been a problem whether it is home or away.
How times how changed ay’?
With both teams making the headlines in the national press for the wrong reasons once again, it couldn’t get any worse for the Premier League duo.
Liverpool looked to change their fortunes on the pitch last Sunday on the back of a successful takeover by American John Henry, but a defeat by local rivals Everton ensured Liverpool wouldn’t be celebrating. The red half of Liverpool now sit 2nd from bottom in the Premier League, having just taken 6 points from 8 games this season.
After fans saw the eventual departure of former manager Rafael Benitiez to Champions League winners Inter Milan and being replaced by Roy Hodgson, they must have thought that it would have been a fresh start for the club after such a disappointing campaign last season. Those fans had another thing coming and they are already calling for the former Fulham boss, who successfully lead Fulham to the Europa Cup final last season, to be axed.
You wouldn’t have thought that a club of Liverpool’s stature would be in such turmoil but it shows how much can change in an instance.
Talking of turmoil, after another poor performance against newly-promoted West Brom on the weekend in which United through away a two-goal lead to eventually draw 2-2, Manchester Unite are again owning the headlines for all the wrong reasons after manager Ferguson has confirmed rumours that star striker Rooney wants to leave are true.
Now I’m not going to get dragged into this circus of rumours surrounding Rooney. The player should count himself lucky that he so heavily-relied on the by their fans and even the country, so to show such a lack of respect towards the manager and their fans is disgraceful in my opinion.
Rooney has constantly been in the limelight after a poor performance at the World Cup with England and with allegations about the striker’s private life whilst wife Coleen was pregnant, it seems Wayne has loved the publicity.
These stories do no favours to both clubs and it’s sad to see the Premier League’s biggest duo in such turmoil, both on and off the pitch, but it only takes a few games to show why they are regarded as the biggest clubs so both clubs still have something to play for this season.
Both clubs have a huge fan base which any club would be proud of and once stability is ensured in the boardroom of both clubs, they can then focus on the pitch and turn their fortunes around.
It could be worse; you could support Palace like I do, that’s more frustrating.
