Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben will miss the opening two months of the season after the hamstring injury which had threatened to rule him out of the World Cup has flared up again.
The club’s doctor has labelled the Dutch FA “irresponsible” for allowing Robben to play with an injury which hadn’t properly healed. The 26 year old who had been in scintillating form during his inaugural campaign with the German giants sustained a slight tear to his hamstring after attempting a back heel in the dyeing embers of a World Cup warm up match against Hungary – where Robben had netted a brace beforehand.
Bayern’s doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt insists he offered his assistance to help with the situation but was ultimately discarded:
He said:
“It’s irresponsible this was not diagnosed accurately and he has played with it.”
“I offered several times to help with the diagnosis but was not called.”
Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk had been sweating on the fitness of an indispensable member of his team who eventually returned in the final group game victory over Cameroon and went onto play four more matches on route to the final.
Robben himself is dismayed by the diagnosis. The former Chelsea and Madrid star is shocked at the news as he believed he made a full recovery:
“I played four World Cup games and went through 120 minutes in the final. After the final I felt no pain and that’s why I went on vacation.”
The Champions League finalists will now be seeking compensation from the Dutch FA. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has even threatened to bring it to the attention of FIFA.
Rummenigge said:
“Of course, Bayern Munich are very angry.”
“Once again we must pay the bill as a club after a player is seriously injured playing for a national team.”
