Young Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has stated his desire to play for the first team in the coming years.

The 20-year-old is set for a second season on loan at German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach for whom he will play UEFA Champions League football this season.

Christensen has come through the Blues’ academy to be one of the top young talents at Stamford Bridge.  His long-term future with Antonio Conte’s side could come down to his performances this season in Germany.

His solid performances at centre-back last season helped Borussia Mönchengladbach to a fourth-place finish and the qualifying rounds of the Champions League next month.

Gladbach Sporting Director Max Eberl has even publicly declared his intentions to sign Andreas Christensen on a permanent basis but so far Chelsea have had no intentions of letting him go.

The player himself just wants to play first-team football and develop his skills at this stage.  His long-term ambition is to play for Chelsea.  Quoted by Goal, Christensen said:

“The main thing is, to play. That’s the main thing that I want for my future. It is all about playing football and that’s it. [Playing at Chelsea] is an ambition of mine, to play over there in the first team but right now I am not thinking about the future.

“I am not thinking about Chelsea and what they are doing and what I am doing. I am focusing on what Borussia is doing. I am just really looking forward to playing games and hopefully qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League.

“I am thinking about what I am doing this season because I really need to push after the first good one. So now I am just really looking forward to push for the second season and try to develop as a footballer even more.”

Christensen makes it clear that his focus for this season is solely with Borussia Mönchengladbach and improving on last season.

New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is currently in the market for a new centre-back, and with John Terry turning 36 in December and Gary Cahill’s future in doubt, perhaps a stellar season in the Bundesliga could lead to the Dane getting his chance at Stamford Bridge during the 2017-18 season…
