The agent of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Marquinhos has admitted that Manchester United have shown interest in the Brazilian defender.
Furthermore, the highly-rated 20-year old could leave in the near future if he is not guaranteed regular football for the French Ligue 1 champions.
Speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien, Marquinhos’ agent Giuliano Bertolucci said:
“Last summer, PSG’s president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] declared that Marquinhos was unsellable. We will see what their position is this summer. Many clubs are interested in the player. Manchester United are one of them, this is true.”
Marquinhos has found himself as the third-choice centre-back under Laurent Blanc, behind the expensive duo of Thiago Silva and David Luiz.
The four-time Brazilian international has started 10 of PSG’s 21 league matches this season.
His agent claims he can play other positions too:
However, all of his starts this season have been in the centre of defence. Despite Serge Aurier currently at the African Cup of Nations and Gregory van der Wiel short of form, Marquinhos has not had his chance at right-back.
The defensive midfield roles are an unlikely option for the youngster with PSG already loaded in this role – Thiago Motta, Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot to name three.
Marquinhos is not prepared to wait on the bench too much longer. His agent added:
“He wants to become the best defender in the world.
“He respects the instructions and choices from his coach but he simply wants to play and spend as little time as possible on the bench.”
The Brazilian is under contract until 2018 which means PSG could demand a very high transfer fee for the solid defender.
It’s unlikely the player will leave the French capital this month but it will be interesting to see if Manchester United or anyone else make a move for Marquinhos over the summer.
Barcelona had previously been intereted but are currently under a transfer embargo for a further 12 months.
