Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has admitted to Sky Sports that the club are making losses at the moment.
Football in England is suspended at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is not yet clear when domestic football in England – and in the rest of Europe – could realistically resume.
Leeds are aiming to clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2020-21 campaign, and the Whites are doing very well in that quest.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 71 points from 37 matches, a point clear of second-placed West Bromwich Albion and seven points clear of third-placed Fulham.
Leeds owner Radrizzani has admitted that with no football on at the moment, the Whites are making massive losses.
Radrizzani told Sky Sports: “It’s a disaster regrettably (for the economic implications of world football).
“A club like ours loses £8-10m every year to be competitive, and nobody wants to keep a business that is losing money every year.
“This situation is worsening our balance. By not having five home matches, we miss out on around £2.5m that are the only source of income given that we don’t have similar amounts coming in from TV rights.
“This aggravated epidemic is worsening this situation that is usually complicated enough.”
Staying optimistic
It must be really tough for clubs in the Championship and in the lower leagues in England at the moment.
However, the clubs should stay optimistic, and the Premier League and the EFL should try to come up with a compensation package for the teams worse hit by this crisis.
Perhaps football in England will be played behind closed doors in May, or maybe the season will resume in late July or August in front of fans inside stadia.
