Manchester United have suffered a blow in signing Dante after the central defender left Bayern Munich and completed a move to Vfl Wolfsburg.

The Express reported Louis van Gaal was interested in sealing a deal for the Brazil international as the Red Devils were looking to bolster their back four for the new season.

The 31-year-old has seen his first team appearances being limited, which forced him to find a new club. He will continue in the Bundesliga as he has sealed a move to Wolfsburg.

A statement on Bayern’s official website read, “FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg have agreed the terms of an immediate transfer for Dante Bonfim Costa Santos (31). The centre-back requested to be released from his contract with FC Bayern, and the club has granted the request.”

The German champions chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted lack of playing time forced the South American defender to leave his current employers. Bayern chief said Dante was unhappy with limited role at the Allianz Arena.

“Dante simply wanted the chance to play regularly. We did not want to deny him this opportunity. “We would like to thank Dante,” Rummenigge said.

“FC Bayern enjoyed great success in his time at the club, with many wonderful moments and trophies. We’ve also come to know and value Dante as a very agreeable and likeable person. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Van Gaal has Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair as the first choice central defenders in the squad after letting Tyler Blackett join Celtic on-loan and Jonny Evans joined West Bromwich Albion on a permanent transfer.
