Uruguay 0-0 France
2010 World Cup Group Stage
11 June 2010
France disappointed in their World Cup opener with a scoreless draw against South American side Uruguay.
The 2006 World Cup runners-up would start out with most of the chances but failed to create many clear cut chances. One of the best chances as in the first half when Franck Ribery sent a cross into the box but Sidney Govou missed on the shot from close range. Uruguay would create a few chances including some shots from striker Diego Forlan.
The second half would be more of the same as France had most of the possession but Uruguay held strong defensively. The best chance towards the end of the match would happen to Forlan who had a shot from inside the box but he missed it wide. Thierry Henry and Florent Malouda both came on as second half substitutes but neither were able to make a difference or give France the lead. It would get interesting in the second half though as Uruguay went down to 10 men because of a Nicolas Lodeiro red card.
It was a poor performance from France who do not look like contenders to reach a second consecutive World Cup final. Uruguay will be satisfied with the draw as it keeps their chances of the knockout stage in decent shape.
