While I can believe that it’s not butter, it’s not as easy for me to come to grips with the fact that it’s already Wednesday. But that means the weekend’s only a couple of days away, and the weekend brings the return of Premier League action and one of the biggest games of the season.
As excited as one can be about the Carling Cup and the prospect of a Manchester United-Tottenham final, it’s even more exciting that we’re only four days away from Manchester United-Chelsea, and the Blues’ recent dip in form makes a positive result a must (and even Frank Lampard knows that).
The Blues’ recent dip in form not only has their title challenge in a precarious position, but it’s got the bookies favoring Luiz Felipe Scolari for the sack. One must remember that finishing runner-up by two points and getting farther than Jose Mourinho got Chelsea in the Champions League didn’t keep Avram Grant employed, so Big Phil best not get too comfortable.
If Chelsea let Liverpool and Manchester United gain some separation, not only will the odds on Scolari getting the sack get higher, but they’ll have to worry about being caught by Aston Villa and Arsenal, who have their own issues to be concerned with right now.
Sunday’s showdown will feature many of the world’s richest footballers. It’s no surprise that David Beckham tops the list, and by more than three times more than Michael Owen. And even though he doesn’t need the money, you better be prepared to splash the cash if you want an interview with him.
Before I continue, I do feel the need to apologize to Harry Redknapp and Daniel Levy for saying that Portsmouth made a clean getaway with Tottenham’s money in the Jermain Defoe deal. However, Portsmouth only get £6m from Tottenham for Defoe, which might be what quite a few value at him anyway.
Aston Villa missed out on Defoe, but they have apparently signed a young Dutch defender named Arsenio Halfuid. I wonder if his parents were big Arsenio Hall fans.
