Ryan Giggs could cut ties with Manchester United and end his 29-year association with the Old Trafford club this summer.

According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, the United legend is disappointed for being “overlooked” for the manager’s job following Louis van Gaal’s sacking.

The 42-year-old, who served as No 2 to Van Gaal and the Dutchman’s predecessor, David Moyes, has been offered a lesser role under new boss Jose Mourinho. But, anything other than the assistant manager role would be a step down for him.

Giggs has returned from a break in Dubai and he is expected to hold talks with Mourinho before the end of the week.

The Welshman joined the club on his 14th birthday and has been at the club for the majority of his life. Working with Mourinho would bolster his CV but Giggs seeks to try his luck on management.

Giggs would want to remain part of the first-team set up if he is to stay at United, but chances are less that Mourinho would consider him for the assistant manager role.

The Portuguese will bring his trusted lieutenants Rui Faria and Silvino Louro, as well as fitness coach Carlos Lalin, with him and very unlikely he will offer the Welshman his desired role.

Giggs would be keen to prove himself at top levels but the most decorated player in British football may have to consider a job in the lower leagues, as there’s hardly any openings in the Premier League at the moment.

Another option for him is managing a foreign club. However, it is a risky venture and knowing it didn’t properly work out for his friend Gary Neville at Valencia, he may not opt to take that route.

Plus, there is no guarantee that he will one day return to manage the club, should he leave now.
