Manchester United will need to pay at least £140 million if they are serious in wanting to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
Reports are that Real Madrid are ready to cash in on the superstar.
The Guardian claim that Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 29-year old. Each of those three clubs are funded by billionaires.
It is believed that Ronaldo and his advisers spoke to a number of top clubs around Europe with the idea of leaving the Spanish capital 18 months ago. However, the reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner only signed a new contract in Madrid last September.
That deal earns Ronaldo £16.4 million a year (£315,384 a week), making him the highest-paid footballer in the world. The current holders of the UEFA Champions League also pay his 52% tax.
Either Ronaldo would need to take a significant pay cut or Manchester United would need to fork out a sizeable sum to match his current wages.
The reported £140 million cost to Manchester United, or any other club for that matter, claimed by the newspaper is a transfer fee of £60 million, and a four-year contract of £380,000-a-week, totalling £79 million.
Real Madrid paid Manchester United £80 million five years ago for his services. Ronaldo turns 30 in February.
However, the Portuguese international has been quoted about his future:
“They are all speculations about my future. My future is Madrid. I’m happy this season is going well and my future I will not speak about, it does not make sense.”
Real Madrid are £400 million in debut so the sale of Ronaldo would make financial sense. Although the signing of James Rodríguez in the summer suggests the club has no fear of their financial situation.
Manchester United broke the British transfer record this past summer when they signed Ángel Di María from Real Madrid for £59.7 million.
